Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme
The Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme has almost a thousand years of history. Established in 1111 A.D., the Comunità protects and supports the people of Fiemme and the valley’s natural and cultural heritage.
The people attachment to their territory and their tendency to self-government are the fundamentals of the “Magnifica Comunità della Val di Fiemme”, an institution which was given an independent administration by the bishop of Trento.
During the centuries, the Comunità, a kind of rough republic, has been able to defend its independence and its features from foreign intrusions. The valley is divided into “regole” which enclose the valley’s towns, whose representatives elect each 4 years the Scario, the Comunità’s president.
The institution manages the territory goods, such as:
- woods
- mountain huts
- meadows
- cattle pasture
- fishing
Moreover it also takes care of legal matters and the arguments were discussed at the Parco della Pieve in Cavalese, still called “banco della reson”, the judgment desk.
It is also the guardian of ancient laws and traditions and, to this day, still jealously takes care of the collective property of the territory: stewarding its mountains, pastures and forests, planning when timber is felled, managing reforestation schemes and maintaining the forest roads and paths.
The Comunità was established by a sparse group of inhabitants that has survived over the centuries, and its deeply rooted traditions and customs have been handed down orally from generation to generation, surviving unchanged up until the upheavals of the Twentieth Century.
Of the 20 thousand hectares covered by the Comunità, 11 thousand consist of forests populated primarily with the renowned Norway Spruce, which serves as a precious source of timber that forms the foundations of the local trading and crafts economy.
To this day, the exceptional quality of the wood and the superlative expertise of the local wood workers give rise to a unique, inimitable product, while the success of this sustainable forestry economy is proven by the international eco-compatibility mark.

The Magnifica Comunità is based in its own Palazzo, a building of particular historical significance in Cavalese, which hosts a gallery, a museum and an archive of manuscripts and texts of great historic importance to the Valle di Fiemme.
Today, in addition to its direct activities in the territory, the Comunità also:
- Grants the use of its mark to promote numerous cultural and sports initiatives and donates funds to community aid organisations, associations and students

- Its historic building (which is currently closed for renovation) is open to the public for guided tours, exhibitions, conferences and concerts
- It also funds the publication of works relevant to the history and life of the Comunità itself.
The Palace of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme
In the Middle Ages the Princes-Bishops of Trento ordered to build the palace of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, as see of their great Vicars and summer house.
In 1850 the palace, with 14th century origins, became the central site of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme.
The tough renovations works on the building gave the palace its ancient splendour.
