Who was Maria Domenica Lazzeri (the "Meneghina")? A young woman from Capriana confined to bed by an unknown illness, deprived of food, water, and sleep for fourteen years. Marked by the stigmata, she lived a life of immense pain while simultaneously experiencing a strong connection with the Spirit, accompanied by miracles, visions, ubiquity, and clairvoyance.
Visitors from all over Europe included professors and philosophers, doctors and scientists. Recognized as Venerable by Pope Francis in 2023, the story of this girl resurfaces with new strength, inspiring communities of devotees even in the United States.
This tale moves people, both yesterday and today, prompting the same levers in the inner struggle between rationality and mystery. Pino Loperfido retraces the life of Maria Domenica, weaving together historical research and personal reflections. Through archives and testimonies, the narrative becomes a meditation on the mystery of signs, the meaning of waiting, and the disruptive strength of those lives that continue to speak to us even after their end.
