The Sounds of the Dolomites

The 20th anniversary of Dave Douglas' Mountain Passages is being commemorated on the banks of the crystal-clear Bombasel Lakes. The year was 2003 when I Suoni delle Dolomiti commissioned the American trumpeter to write a score dedicated to Alpine music and culture, with a focus on the Ladin tradition. Seizing upon the spirit and style of the festival, he dispensed with the piano and double bass and wrote instead for the unusual combination of trumpet, cello, tuba, drums and clarinet.

And so, Mountain Passages was born, a composition broken down into 12 songs, all of which are profound yet playful. The writer and musicians accompany the audience on a journey through contemplation and celebration of nature. During its first live world premiere at I Suoni delle Dolomiti at Rifugio Boè and Rifugio Brentei, it received public and critical acclaim. 20 years later, Dave Douglas’s trumpet will once again be heard alongside Michael Moore on saxophone and clarinet, Peggy Lee on cello, Marcus Rojas on tuba, and Dylan van der Schyff on percussion.
