The Sounds of the Dolomites 2016

“Il Pescatore” will be evoked in the middle of sea bottoms surfaced 65 millions of years ago on Saturday 2nd July 2016, the first concert of the festival The Sounds of the Dolomites.

The big passions for art and nature meet in natural theatres of Trentino. “The Sounds of the Dolomites” let free classical, jazz, world music notes and singer-author songs in places of amazing beauty.

Worldwide famous artists take part in the Festival, musicians fond of mountains who, in total respect of the environment, join their audience and walk to the natural stages carrying their own musical instrument. World-famous artists express their creativity by conversing with the nature surrounding them through the poetry of silence. The public is not a simple listener: people take their sit around the musicians, informally and respectfully, to live an unforgettable experience.

The stages are natural amphitheatres in the dolomitic “Natural World Heritage” peaks.

Besides the concerts, scheduled at 13:00, they organize 3-day treks and musical experiences at sunrise.

Here you find the scheduled events in Val di Fiemme and in the near Val di Fassa, San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero and Vanoi.

In Val di Fiemme, jazz improvisations by Franco D’Andrea, the saxophones of the ensemble Selmer Saxharmonic and the graceful singing of quartet Huun-Huur Tu from Tuva tradition. In Val di Fassa, tribute to De André by Neri Marcorè and Gnu Quartet, then jazz music performed by Markus Stockhausen's and Tara Bouman's trumpet and clarinet, the Lapp songs of Mari Boine, a trek and a Mario Brunello, Giuliano Carmignola and Rolf Lieslevand's concert, another concert by the jazz star Stefano Bollani and two world music concerts, the first by Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Ségal and the latter by Barcelona Gipsy Balkan Orchestra.

San Martino di Castrozza and Primiero host a Bach concert for a virtuoso cello by Mischa Maisky, a trek with the sounding magic without borders of Petra Magoni and Ilaria Fantin, and one concert by Petra Magoni, Ilaria Fantin and Ferruccio Spinetti.

THE CONCERT: Neri Marcorè, versatile performer, cinema, theatre and television actor, renowned also for his comic roles, and a quartet of unusual instruments (cello, violin, flute, viola) pay tribute to Fabrizio De André, taking their impetus from a line from one of his most well-known songs, “Il Pescatore” (The Fisherman) and, in particular, from Neri's favourite verse Like a sort of smile.

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Gruppo Costabella, Cima Uomo, Val San Nicolò, località Jonta. A walk through the breathtaking Val San Nicolò, accompanied by sound of water among mountain huts, meadows full of flowers and deep woods. The silhouettes of Cima Uomo and Col Ombert get slowly revealed as long as you reach the huge meadow of Jonta. A green embrace makes you sit down while listening to the soft chant of little waterfalls.

Franco D’Andrea's piano playing style and his music are a felicitous encounter between tradition and the more advanced expressions of jazz. The addition of the dynamic Dutch drummer Han Bennink and two versatile musicians, clarinettist Daniele D’Agaro and trombonist Mauro Ottolini, means there’ll be a few surprises in store.

LOCATION: Val di Fiemme, Corno Nero-Pala Santa mountain group, Passo di Lavazé. When you walk along the forestry paths through the woods of spruces, pastures and peat bogs of Passo Lavazé, you can stare at the white towers of Latemar. An ancient legend says they were dolls dressed in silk that a witchcraft turned into cold rocks. Southwards, Corno Nero and Corno Bianco look over the meadows of Passo Oclini.

Trumpet and clarinet music at high altitude

Markus Stockhausen plays the trumpet, Tara Bouman various clarinets and the basset horn. They both share a musical vision oblivious to barriers of style and genre - their musical backgrounds encompass classical and contemporary music and jazz. Playing is a means of interacting with the space they occupy. They follow scores, improvise, but above all they dialogue with the silence of the mountains, the blue of the sky and the glances of their audience. 

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Costabella mountain group, Cima Uomo, Passo delle Selle, Rifugio Bergvagabunden Hütte. From the chromatic differences of the panoramic summit dividing Valle di San Pellegrino from Val Monzoni, you can start a journey back to the First World War in the Dolomites. Sure enough, from the mountain hut at Passo delle Selle, the most skilful trekkers can walk on two assisted paths – one is westward, the Alta Via “Bruno Federspiel”, the other is eastward, the Alta Via “Bepi Zac” Pellegrin. Both cover the first Austrian line of this sector of the alpine front, along pathways, tunnels, wooden boardwalks.

World music: a voice from the far North at dawn

Experiencing a dawn in the Dolomites accompanied by the voice of the far North. The first daylight give off Mari Boine's songs, the artist discovered at the beginning of the Nineties by Peter Gabriel, who asked her to record the famous album “Gula Gula”.

Mari Boine's voice is Sami people's voice, the inhabitants of the farthest end of Northern Europe, called Lapland. The singer combines the Sami traditional music with modern sounds, giving life to a very fascinating mix.

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Lusia-Bocche mountain group, Col Margherita. Col Margherita is an extraordinary panoramic point overlooking the dolomitic mountain groups that Unesco declared World Heritage Sites. In the foreground, at South-East, the sharp peaks similar to rocky cathedrals of Pale di San Martino; eastward, the wall of Civetta and the lonely Monte Pelmo. At North,  Costabella and Monzoni with a glimpse to Marmolada, the queen of the Dolomites. Then, at west,  Latemar and Catinaccio.

How to get there: from Passo San Pellegrino take the Col Margherita cable car then continue on foot for 20 mins, 100-metre downhill, difficulty Easy.

On the program of the Selmer Saxharmonic, the 12-piece German ensemble conducted by Milan Turkovic, Dvorak, Milhaud, Shostakovic, but also Rota and Morricone.

From sopranino to bass, via soprano, alto, tenor and baritone: the entire family of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax make their appearance with an ensemble who have picked up numerous awards for their concerts and recordings.

LOCATION: Val di Fiemme, Lagorai mountain chain, Laghetti di Bombasèl. The mountain little glacial lakes can be reached by walking along ancient military mule tracks created by young soldiers during the First World War. Lagorai is the largest mountain group of the western Trentino. It's the silence accompanying you in these wild lands, where the eagles fly. At a short distance, your eyes will see the magnificient heritage of the Dolomites.

Classical music: Bach for a virtuoso cello

Johann Sebastian Bach’s third and fifth Cello Suites form the centrepiece of this concert by one of the greatest living cellists. Born in Riga, Latvia, and winner of the highly prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966, Misha Maisky has had a brilliant concert career which has taken him all round the world. His stylistic versatility and technical virtuosity are very appreciated everywhere. Maisky has also played with other highly renowned musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Matha Argerich e Yuri Bashmet.

LOCATION: San Martino di Castrozza, Pale di San Martino, Rifugio Rosetta Giovanni Pedrotti. “A huge desert of rocks, too much sun for the ice, too much bitter cold for the flowers… nothing to browse, neither for a chamois”. These were the mountaineer D. W. Freshfield's words after having reached Passo della Rosetta from San Martino di Castrozza with his guides, to describe the large flatland of Pale 150 years ago. Nowadays, from Col Verde you can take the cable car and, at a very short distance, get at Rifugio Rosetta Giovanni Pedrotti, one of the most ancient mountain huts of Trentino, built in the rocky expanses shaped by ice in a still primordial scenery.

Classical music: walking in the Dolomites with ancient sounds

Three days in nature among the sounds evoking past memories. An original trio - cello, violin and Baroque guitar, as well as vihuela and theorbo – is the protagonist of the first 2016's The Sounds of the Dolomites trek. This year Mario Brunello is accompanied by two great musicians: Giuliano Carmignola and the Norge Rolf Lieslevand. This trek sows the seeds of an ambitious project that Mario Brunello is realizing in 2018: the foundation of Peace Orchestra.

Day 1: 5 hr walk, 505-metre vertical ascent, 682-metre downhill, difficulty EEA (skilled and equipped hikers)

Day 2: 4 hr 50 min walk, 752-metre vertical ascent, 253-metre downhill descent, difficulty EEA (skilled and equipped hikers)

Classical music: Baroque strings at 2.500 metres

a concert ranging from a Baroque repertoire (Vivaldi top of the list) to transcriptions of popular melodies which inspired many songs of the Great War. The protagonists are the cellist Mario Brunello, the violinist Giuliano Carmignola and the Norwegian guitarist Rolf Lieslevand (also a virtuoso of ancient instruments such as the vihuela and theorbo). The concert is also a tribute to Bepi de Marzi, author of many well-known choral compositions, in particular “Signore delle cime” (Lord of the Mountains).

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Catinaccio mountain group, Rifugio Antermoia. The woods and pastures of Val Duron and Val de Dona surround us towards Passo delle Ciaregole and Passo di Dona, to the entrance of the rocky amphitheatre behind the completely-renovated Rifugio Antermoia. The brisk air up there almost seems to pay back the echoes of the legend telling about the gorgeous Antermoia and her epic poet.

At the end of her trek with Ilaria Fantin, Petra Magoni is reunited with her companion of countless, impassioned adventures in sound, double-bassist Ferruccio Spinetti, the other half of Musica Nuda, the celebrated voice and double-bass venture which has taken Europe by storm with its original take on songs of disparate origins. Songs from their recent album Little Wonder resonate with fresh nuances in dialogue with the landscape, the sun and the rocks.

LOCATION: Primiero, Pale di San Martino, Villa Welsperg. The ruins of Castel Pietra are silent guardians of Val Canali, one of the privileged locations of the Natural Park Paneveggio Pale di San Martino, at the foot of Pale. Right at the beginning of Val Canali, in the woods at the limits of Piereni, lies the nineteenth-century Villa Welsperg, the main visitor's centre of the Natural Park, with the brand-new biodiversity route.

STEFANO BOLLANI, A JAZZ STAR CLOSE TO THE SKY

Stefano Bollani sits at his piano and starts to play, to improvise: he plays everything - jazz standards, old Italian songs, pop songs, classical compositions. And sometimes he sings, too, with all the poise of an accomplished entertainer. His energy looks like coming from another planet and his latest album confirms that, “The Aliens are Coming”. Stefano Bollani is a versatile performer who likes to surprise not just his audience but most of all himself. He is always fascinating, in the mountains as elsewhere.

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Sassolungo mountain group, Rifugio Micheluzzi. Since ever, this dolomitic valley, between Catinaccio and the black volcanic stones at the foot of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, has been traversed by man. Our ancestors used to travel along the “Road of Salt” to carry this precious food from the Adriatic Sea to the Alps; after Cadore, they walked on to Val Duròn to reach Bolzano and the core of the Alps. From Rifugio Micheluzzi, that can be reached from Campitello, it worths going beyond, along the easy-to-walk road at the bottom of the valley, along the meadows scattered with the typical mountain huts and accompanied by the sound of water flowing in the stream up to the border with Alpe di Siusi.

World Music: the mysteries of throat singing

Timeless music. Huun-Huur Tu quartet, custodians of the folk traditions of Tuva, a small republic of the Russian Federation on the border with Mongolia. The tradition of throat singing will enchant the natural amphitheatre of Buse de Tresca, accompanied by traditional string and percussion instruments such as the igil, the khomus and the dünggür drum.

LOCATION: Val di Fiemme, Buse de Tresca. When you walk along the paths that from Alpe di Pampeago or Passo Feudo go up to Buse de Tresca, at the foot of Dos Capèl, is like reading a book of the surprising geology of the Dolomites. What is more thrilling than walking right on the crater that 230 millions of years ago had been the largest volcano in Europe, that large it collapsed because of its won weight? And it's not enough: in the meanwhile, you'll be admiring dolomitic tops like Latemar and Pale di San Martino.

BALLAKÉ SISSOKO & VINCENT SÉGAL

Ballaké Sissoko, Ballaké Sissoko is from Mali and plays the kora, traditional instrument of the griots, storyteller musicians from Western Africa. He's knows also for his collaborations with Toumani Diabaté, Rokia Traoré and Ludovico Einaudi. Vincent Ségal is French and plays one of the symbols of European classical tradition, the cello. The strings of both instruments interweave to create a seductive alchemy of sounds, the expression of a heartfelt embrace between different cultures, between Africa and Europe.

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Viezzena-Bocche mountain group, Malga Canvere. Between Castelìr and Passo Lusia, woods and pastures look over the peaks of Lagorai mountain chain and Travignolo valley, at the wester border with the Natural Park Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino. You'll be walking on an easy-to-walk forestry road in the wood, surrounded by the most ancient stones of Trentino formed 270 millions of years ago, like those of the near Lagorai. Malga Canvere is a balcony overlooking Pale di San Martino, with its pasture at a short distance from the other malgas. A bit higher, at the foot of Lastè di Lusia, a confused series of small lakes, like pearls of a broken necklace.

World music: multi-ethnic sounds at high altitude

BARCELONA GIPSY BALKAN ORCHESTRA

Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra represent a notable slice of Europe: they come from Serbia, France, Ukraine, Italy, Greece and, of course, Catalonia. They start out from klezmer and gypsy textures, to arrive at a sound mixture that takes in influences from Jewish, Ashkenazi and Sephardic, as well as Ottoman and Arab traditions. The sounds of this incredibly wide cultural mix will fill up the wonderful natural stage.

LOCATION: Val di Fassa, Marmolada mountain group, Ciampac. You can take the cable car which  alla funivia, che reaches the hollow between Colàc and Crepa Nigra or you can start walking from Alba, or follow the path to Val Contrìn, then change to Baita Locia Contrin, go right to the wood “Viel de Ciamorces” to arrive to our destination. On the right of the large hollow you can see the massive western cliff of Colàc, traversed by a famous via ferrata, while on the left side there is a grassy hogback that continues to the ridge of Crepa Nigra, separated by a little and still immaculate naturalistic pearl, Val Crepa.
