The Japanese culture presents a paradox in the relationship between society, civic engagement, and protest. On one hand, we find wa (和), the harmony that permeates social life. On the other, forms of dissent that challenge stereotypes about Japanese passivity.
Wa privileges the group over the individual. Society values giri (duty) over ninjo (feelings), creating a system where collective harmony prevails over individual expression through codified hierarchies like senpai-kohai.
Contemporary Japan has demonstrated significant capacity for protest. The SEALDs movement (2015-16) organized the largest pacifist demonstrations since the late 1960s, involving over 120,000 people against militaristic policies. These events show how even in a culture of harmony, a strong civic consciousness can emerge when fundamental values are threatened.
With the association Yomoyamabanashi, we will embark on a journey into a distant culture that has given much to modern civilization.
