Short and interesting tour to discover the ancient rock writings of the shepherds of the Val di Fiemme.
For many centuries, the steep mountain sides above the valley’ towns have been used to graze goats and sheep. Today, the rock writings on the sides of Mount Cornon and Pizzancae are proof of this old habit. The writings date back to a period between the 15th and 20th century.

Did you know? The shepherds’ writings were made with hematite (red ocher) mixed with saliva or goat or sheep milk. A stick, whose tip was chewed or softened with a stone, was used as a paint brush. The writings mostly include the shepherd’s initials, the year and the number of grazing sheep and goats.

Starting point
Tesero
Directions
From the parking lot, walk along the dirt road that, constantly and slightly climbing, leads to the area of Salime. Once at the crossroad, take the road on the right that continues through a beautiful wood of pines. Just before getting to the creek, you can spot on the left a rock covered with red writings. Crossed the bridge, you can admire a small waterfall on the right and if you look up on the left side, you can see another piece of rock with further writings.
How to get there
From Cavalese or Predazzo, drive to Tesero and take Via Cavada. The road, quite narrow and very steep, is paved for the first part then turns into a dirt road. Continue until the road crosses with a forest road, drive past it, then park your car on the left side of the road.
Where to park
In the small square on the left side of the road.
Hiking shoes, rain-jacket, hiking poles, water, sun cream
