It is 1518, in Edolo, in Valle Camonica, when a terrible drought, along with a plague that kills men and animals, plunges the village into total chaos. The villagers are exhausted, the witches have struck again! Tired of fornicating and dancing with Beelzebub in the meadows of Mount Tonale, they have come back down to spread their mephitic powders on men and flocks.
Four women are deemed guilty of such crimes and, chased by an enraged crowd, find refuge in the church of San Giovanni Battista.
The four women: a healer, a prostitute, a noblewoman, and a peasant, are interrogated at length by the inquisitor, but none confess. Yet among them hides at least one witch! The crowd is restless, anger mounts and boils among the people, the cup is full. The crowd shouts loudly: Cursed witches!
By tomorrow morning, one of the four must surrender to the secular arm, so that justice may be done. One night of time to decide who among the four must sacrifice herself for the others. One night of time to find a scapegoat. One night of time to decide who, among the four unfortunate ones, must be burned alive in the public square.

The witch hunt is a sadly well-known event that spanned across Europe for many centuries, reaching as far as the Americas.
Lamia, masca, janara, baugia, striga, stria, many, many more are the variants of "witch" found in the dialects across our peninsula.
The show aims to tell, through the lens of comedy, some novellas, legends, and folktales, featuring women as protagonists. But be careful, these are not angelic women or objects of desire, but malevolent, seductresses, herbalists, and courtesans. Like the sexually voracious women depicted in French fabliaux, the rebellious women of Latin literature, or the great sinners of ancient scriptures. Set against the backdrop of the most terrible witch hunt ever to occur at the borders of the Republic of San Marco: the bonfires of Valle Camonica.
