Tra miniere e natura alla scoperta delle vie dei canopi

You went out with the mountain guide Simone Filippo, organized by the Ecomuseo Argnetario and Rete di Riserve Val di Cembra to learn about the historical and natural heritage by walking on the Masen-Faedo mining trail.

The Canopi Trail is a hiking path dedicated to the miners who in the Middle Ages sought copper and silver among these hills. We call them "canĂ²pi" from the ancient German term Bergknappen, because they came from what are now Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, regions where mining had long been established.

In written sources, the mines of this territory are mentioned only from the end of the 1400s, when a delegate of the mining judge was established in Faedo, first from Trento and then from Pergine. The documents speak of the resumption of ancient excavations, indicating that the deposit had been discovered much earlier.

The extractive activity likely developed already at the end of the 1100s, during the period when the Counts of Appiano were lords of the Castle of Königsberg-Monreale, downstream from Faedo. This important Tyrolean family contested the possession of several mines throughout Trentino with the Prince-Bishopric of Trento. Shortly thereafter, at the beginning of the 1200s, Prince-Bishop Federico Vanga had a collection of laws drafted (the Codex Wangianus), which included a sort of mining statute, reaffirming the rights of the episcopate over precious metals. At that time, silver was used to mint Trento's coinage.

Traversing the woods between Giovo and Faedo, we will encounter diverse geological formations and discover the various techniques used by the miners depending on the type of deposit.

In addition to being an ancient mining area, the territory where the path winds is also an interesting naturalistic route, rich in tree species that we will learn to recognize.

At the end of the walk, we will find the "CanĂ²pi Village," a beautiful playground inspired by the work and life of ancient miners.

The Canopi Trail is a simple walk, suitable for everyone, including families with children
