A short and interesting route to discover the ancient rock writings of the shepherds of Val di Fiemme.
For many centuries, the steep slopes of the arid sides above the villages were used for grazing sheep and goats. Today, the testimony of this practice remains thanks to the rock writings present on the slopes of Monte Cornon and Pizzancae. The writings date from a period between the second half of the 1600s to beyond the middle of the last century.

CURIOSITY: The shepherds’ writings were made with hematite (red ochre) mixed with saliva or sheep or goat milk. A twig, whose tip was chewed or softened with a stone, was used as a brush. The writings mostly consist of the shepherd’s initials, the year, and the number of goats and sheep brought to pasture.

Starting point
Tesero
Directions
From the parking lot, you start walking on the dirt road that gently and steadily climbs towards Loc. Salime. Upon reaching a fork, continue on the road to the right which leads into a splendid Scots pine forest. Just before reaching the stream, on the left you will notice a boulder covered with red writings. After crossing the bridge, you can admire a small waterfall on the right and, on the left, above, a rock with more writings.
How to get there
From Cavalese and Predazzo, head to Tesero and take Via Cavada. The paved road (a bit narrow and very steep) then becomes a dirt road. After passing a junction with a forest road, there is a clearing on the left where you can park your car.
Where to park
In the clearing on the left.
