The plot: Edna Silvera, sixty years of misanthropy and a brilliant career as an art historian and restorer, is determined to make the most of her sabbatical year: in her house amidst the greenery of the Ligurian hills, surrounded only by ancient paintings, funny chickens with grandiose names, and her cat Cagliostro. Her plans are thrown into disarray by the invitation of her old friend Antonia, who asks her to come to Naples to help with a seminar at the university. As fate would have it, as soon as she steps foot in the city, Antonia finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation as the prime suspect when a man known as a champion of morality and connected to the Curia is killed under unclear circumstances. Edna has no doubt that her friend is innocent, so she has no choice but to work with the inspector assigned to uncover who killed the victim in order to exonerate her.
