The most difficult case that Inspector Cataldo can encounter is to solve a crime involving a family that has no enemies. Yes, because the father, Franco Rubino, is a respected business consultant; the wife, Aida, a quiet housewife; the daughter, Melissa, a poor student but a brilliant influencer; the son, Santiago, a shy twelve-year-old but a promising football player. Yet, even a sky so clear has its lightning to disrupt it, when the youngest daughter, Betty, four years old, is kidnapped. Who is behind the ransom demand? Could someone, inside or around the family, have a double life? Remembering Pirandello (“don’t trust anyone, because no one is as you believe they are”), Cataldo directs the investigations in various directions, in a frantic race against time, when suddenly, the little girl is found safe and sound, without the ransom being paid. All is well then, or at least it seems so. But the inspector still has doubts. And indeed, a few days later, two murdered bodies confirm to him that the case is far from closed; rather, the latest developments in the investigation will lead him – in a cruel twist of fate – to a shocking truth, as horrific as it is obscene.
