How does the forest regrow after the Vaia storm?
In Val Calamento, thousands of young seedlings have been counted and the environmental factors that promote or hinder forest regeneration have been analyzed using a statistical approach. The results show that nature carefully chooses where trees regrow. Understanding its signals helps humans protect and guide the rebirth of the forest, especially where it is most fragile.
What impact have Vaia and the bark beetle had on the carbon balance of the forests in the Province of Bolzano?
Under normal conditions, the forests of South Tyrol absorb over 500,000 tons of carbon each year, equivalent to almost 2 million tons of COâ‚‚. One hectare of forest alone offsets the average annual emissions of one person. However, extreme events like Vaia and the bark beetle reduce this absorption capacity.
To address climate change, it will be essential to rethink forestry, developing strategies capable of maintaining the ecological functions of the forest.
