After obtaining permission to access these mysterious and mystical places, the Spanish director Santos Blanco explores the world of cloistered monasteries. The documentary is filmed in twelve cloistered monasteries located in various provinces of Spain. Through encounters with people belonging to different religious orders who live in those convents, it tells the story of those who have chosen to live away from the distractions of the world to focus on contemplation and prayer.
The idea was born from an experience lived by the director, specifically from his involvement during the pandemic in an advertising campaign to support economically struggling monasteries. Experiencing this reality pushed him to delve deeper into the investigation of this hidden world, documenting it and engaging in a reflection on spirituality.
The documentary invites reflection on the complex relationship between spirituality and freedom, suggesting how freeing oneself from the superfluous and social pressures can favor a greater and better self-awareness.
