The Japanese chef is actually not Japanese; his name is Hugo, and he arrived in Paris from a remote village in the heart of France. One evening, while preparing omelets in a wooden chalet among the trees of the Bois de Vincennes, two shrewd blue eyes fall on him. Madame Laval is an eccentric old lady, decidedly gourmet and a serial liar: as soon as she sees him, for some reason, she becomes determined to transform him into a great chef. It marks the beginning of a bizarre, tender friendship that conceals within it clear gestures of care. Together, the Japanese chef and Margot discover a city within a city, “Paname”: a labyrinth of refined dishes and legendary wines, exotic or traditional kitchens, mythical restaurants, and fallen nobility presenting themselves for dinner. A world filled with stories that smell of secrets, butter, and champagne.
