Theatrical monologue by Alessandro Baricco, staged by the Teatroe company.
The story, told by a musician, is set between the two world wars, on a transatlantic ship sailing the vastness of the ocean, shuttling between Europe and America. On board the ship, the black sailor Danny Boodman finds an abandoned child and decides to take care of him. The child is named Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon Novecento. For eight years, Novecento is looked after by the sailor, but then, following an accident, the man dies and Novecento is left alone.
Having vanished into thin air, Novecento is found after a few days while practicing playing the piano. Although he has never played before, the boy demonstrates extraordinary ability.
From that moment on, everyone began to talk about the pianist's skill on the ocean. Novecento's story is incredible; born on the ship, he has never set foot on land, living an entire existence in the microcosm of the vessel, choosing to remain forever in the finite world of the steamship, playing his music through which he expresses himself, rather than facing the vastness of an unknown world, a frightening world where one cannot discern an end, where the infinite multiplicity of possible choices disorients and paralyzes.
Novecento, who was adapted into a film version by Giuseppe Tornatore in 1998 in "The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean," is a deep work rich in interpretations, through which Alessandro Baricco moves and prompts reflection on life choices, on the relationship between man and the concept of infinity, and on overcoming one’s own limits.
