Show by the "Ass. Teatrale Alense" Company from Ala on the theme of World War II.
April 1945. World War II is coming to an end and the German troops are in retreat.
In Giazza, a small mountain hamlet in the province of Verona, the officer in charge of the German detachment seeks an agreement with the partisans for a withdrawal without incidents. Don Domenico Mercante, the parish priest of the small village, is identified as the right interlocutor to start the negotiation. At first the priest's mediation seems to bear fruit, but the situation deteriorates with the arrival of a platoon of parachutists from the Waffen-SS, pressed by another partisan brigade coming from the plain. Gunfire ensues, disrupting the agreements. Don Mercante is taken hostage to ensure that the German soldiers can retreat without incidents. After a long march on foot through Passo Pertica and the Valley of Ronchi, the soldiers with Don Mercante arrive in Ala, where they decide to dispose of the hostage by executing him in the Ceré area. In the execution platoon is also the SS soldier Leonhard Dallasega, originally from Proves, in Val di Non, who, as a Christian and Catholic, refuses to shoot the priest. For this act of insubordination, he is likewise executed on the spot and stripped of any identifying elements. Many years later, and after meticulous research that has allowed the unknown German soldier to be named, an old partisan, a direct witness to those events, pays rightful tribute to two men “witnesses in common holocaust of the triumph of divine laws over the barbarity of war.”
