The Cauriol Refuge is located at 1600 m above sea level in the Val di Sadole, surrounded by the beautiful and untouched Lagorai mountain range.
From the Cauriol Refuge, several peaks of the Lagorai can be reached, such as the namesake Mount Cauriol, the Cardinal, or Busa Alta, peaks rich in remnants and fortifications dating back to the Great War. It is also a stop on the TransLagorai, the high route that spans the entire mountain range for about 80 km. Inside the refuge, there is a collection of artifacts, photos, books, and letters that recount that dramatic period. Besides the more challenging hikes, a simple 30/40-minute walk will lead you to the Pian delle Maddalene, a wonderful grassy plateau where you can stop for a relaxing afternoon picnic.
To reach the refuge, you start from the village of Ziano and follow the road signs to the Cauriol Refuge. The last stretch of road, about 1 km, can only be traversed on foot with a simple walk (approximately 20 min.) on a dirt road. The location is particularly suitable for families, as next to the refuge there is a small playground with swings and a stream where you can cool off on hot summer days.
The Cauriol Refuge has 20 beds (reservation required) and also offers traditional Trentino dishes for lunch and dinner made with products from the family farm.
In summer, the refuge provides bouldering mattresses (crash pads) free of charge for customers.
