A walk to discover the fantastic world of wood, between past and present, ancient uses and new technologies

The route “From the Forest to Home” aims to be an immersion in the fantastic world of wood. Walking along the paths around Grumes, we will try together to discover the relationship that has linked man to the forest ecosystem for millennia, understood as an environment to confront but also as a precious economic resource, especially for Alpine populations. This close relationship has generated artisanal professions (carpenters and sawyers) who knew how to use different types of wood depending on their intended use. Along the route, we will encounter the water-powered sawmill, the forest ecosystem, the historic chestnut grove, and modern sawmills and carpentries ending at Green Grill-Info and Flavors, the house of the Rete di Riserve entirely built of wood.

Starting point

Piazza Municipio - Grumes

Directions

The starting point of this route is the village of Grumes. From Piazza Municipio, the central square of the village, turn right and take the slightly uphill road in front of L’Ost-Ostello di Grumes and the Famiglia Cooperativa grocery store. Continue uphill until you reach the SS 612, cross it, and take the uphill road that leads into the woods. From here, continue straight until you reach a fork with a small path descending to Sega Lontana, the Venetian sawmill. From there, climb back up the Sentiero dei Vecchi Mestieri to the Cristofori Mill, then turn left and follow the signs to La Val. Climb further and then follow the signs toward Baita Penna Nera. From there, descend back to Grumes passing through the sensory route.

For those coming from Trento, follow SS 612 north towards Grumes. The parking lot is located near the “Le Fontanelle” Multifunctional Center.

For those coming from Val di Fiemme, follow SS 612 south towards Grumes. The parking lot is located near the “Le Fontanelle” Multifunctional Center.
