A walk to discover the amazing world of the wood. Between past and present time, old customs and new technologies.

The itinerary “from the wood to home” is meant to be a full immersion into the amazing world of wood. Walking on the paths around Grumes we will try to discover together the relationship which since millennia connects people and the wood ecosystem, meant as the environment we need to relate well to as well as an essential economic resource especially for the populations of the Alps. This strong relationship has created multiple artisan workers (woodworker, carpenter, woodcutter) who knew how to use the different types of wood depending on their final use.

Several interesting points are on this way: the water driven sawmill, the wood ecosystem, the historical chestnut wood, the modern sawmills and joineries to Green Grill – Info e Sapori (Info and Taste), the house of Rete di Riserve (Reserves Network) fully built with wood.

A deserved stop on the way to or back is Green Grill – Info e Sapori (Info and Taste) and the house of Rete di Riserve (Reserves Network) on the main road S.S. 612 to taste or buy local products, receive more information on the area, enjoy a view of the valley from the wonderful panoramic terrace.

Starting point

Piazza Municipio (town hall square) - Grumes

Directions

The starting point of this itinerary is the town Grumes. From Piazza del Municipio (town hall square), the central square of the town, turn right and take the road going slightly up in front of the hostel L’Ost-Ostello and the food shop Famiglia Cooperativa. Go up to reach the main road S.S. 612, then cross the street and take the road going up into the wood. From here go straight ahead until you reach a crossroads with a little path going down to Sega Lontana, the Venetian sawmill. From here climb back the trail “Sentiero dei Vecchi Mestieri” to the mill Mulino Cristofori then turn left and follow the road signs for La Val. Go uphill and follow the road signs to the hut Baita Penna Nera. From there go back down to Grumes passing on the sensory itinerary.
