The protagonist, Volpone, an old Venetian gentleman, aided by his servant Mosca, pretends to be dying in order to milk greedy and foolish customers, obtaining gifts and favors in the hope of inheritance. Deceptions, betrayals, and caricatures expose a society dominated by "Money God," where in the end, everyone, both deceivers and deceived, is punished, leaving a dark and grotesque image of man.
