The Bear's Envy
Comedy (with music) Transanimalist and Transalpine
By Angela Dematté | with Giuliano Comin and Angela Dematté | directed by Alice Sinigaglia
The bear has been the king of animals in all of Europe for centuries, and in the last 30 years, it has returned to inhabit the forests of Northern Italy, closely interacting with the women and men who live here.
The success beyond expectations of its reintroduction in Trentino in 1999 has led to the presence of 120 bears in the Central Alps. This proliferation creates problems, divisions, and sometimes tragedies. The relationship between humans and bears is once again controversial. Author and actress, Angela Dematté, originally from Trentino, feels these themes very close and through research, studies, and the collection of testimonies, she has written The Bear's Envy. A Comedy (with music) transanimalist and transalpine.
The protagonists of the show are Aldo and Giuliana, mountain people. Giuliana ends up becoming an accountant because she is good at school. Aldo is a livestock breeder and also a hunter, and like all hunters, he becomes deeply connected to the animals for months. He does not kill those he desires, but those necessary for the ecosystem in which he lives. Aldo and Giuliana get married, but something goes wrong in Aldo's work. Perhaps it has to do with the bear that has devoured his livestock. Perhaps it has to do with other changes: those between genders and those between the individual and the community. The bear is a magnificent animal: it possesses impulsiveness, instinct, strength, sleeps for months as if dead, and then rises again. The bear is pure instinct, it has no responsibilities. Aldo wishes he could be like that. He identifies with it. Accompanying them are the alpine songs, present to make the two protagonists feel that they are never truly alone. So it is in a small human community, for better or for worse. The choir's songs recall struggles, war, courageous actions of the past, but also the constant risk that today's mountaineers face: to become men and women of folklore, without true rituals anymore. Inside them and outside of them: the bear. Before and after its introduction into the Trentino area of the Alps, the bear is there.
